Proper nutrition fuels pet health.

Cats have extremely keen sense, especially their sense of smell. Temperature and aroma of a cat’s food truly determines if they will love it or not.

In fact, the Journal of Veterinary Behaviour did a study that show “Cats prefer warmer food, especially as they grow older"

Let’s go over some reasons why cats actually prefer room temperature food over refrigerated food :

Enhanced Aroma

For cats, smell is everything! They so keenly rely on this sense to enjoy their food. When the food is cold, it can reduce the volatility of the aromatic compounds in the food, make is much less fragrant. Room temperature food is highly appealing to cats due to its stronger aroma which can stimulate their appetite and encourage healthy eating habits.

Texture of the Food

Refrigerated food is usually a bit firmer as compared to the more natural, softer texture of room temperature food.

Taste Sensitivity

Cats are more sensitive to taste when the food is close to their body temperature. Room temperature food might be perceived as more flavorful because it closely matches their natural preference for warmth. It’s enhanced flavours provide a more pleasurable eating experience.

Avoidance of Cold Sensations

Cats, like many animals, are instinctively averse to cold sensations. Cold food might be less comfortable for them to eat, particularly if it's significantly colder than their body temperature.

Mouse Temperature

Cat’s are predators and they may prefer warmer food as it is closer to the body temperature of a fresh prey (approx 100°F (38°C)) they would be hunting in the wild. Room temperature food would provide for a more fresh and enticing meal.

“Did you know : Serving food at room temperature can help prevent digestive issues and encourage better eating habits, ensuring your cat remains healthy and satisfied.”

Is Microwaving the food the solution?

We wouldn’t recommend heating your cat’s food up that way. There are a few reasons :
  1. Microwaving can change the fat molecules, which makes it harder for our cats to digest.
  2. Microwaving also decreases the nutrients that should be available to our cats.

So what’s the better way?

  • You can let the bowl float in warm or hot water so the food reaches room temperature.
  • You should stir it a few times in the bowl to ensure the food loosens.
